The Armstrong SAGE UMT® is a wireless hand-held steam trap testing tool designed to make testing steam traps as simple as pressing a button. It uses a state-of-the-art piezo electric acoustic sensor developed and tuned specifically for the unique conditions found in steam traps. Coupled with a non-contact infrared temperature sensor, the SAGE UMT® provides accurate and reliable trap diagnostics.

The device is completely wireless and connects to any smartphone or tablet running the SAGE® mobile app via Bluetooth® technology. This eliminates tangled or melted cords and gives technicians the freedom to test traps quickly and easily. Information gathered is sent directly to the SAGE® app, where it is immediately processed and recorded, eliminating manual log sheets and data entry errors.

The left side of the SAGE UMT® houses the RFID scanner. To read a SAGE® RFID tag, simply touch it to the center of the left side of the unit. When successfully scanned, the RFID indicator light will remain steady on for 10 seconds.

Proper Probe Touch Points

For accurate testing, the probe must be placed firmly against the correct touch point on the steam trap, maintaining about 5 pounds (2.25 kgf) of pressure throughout the 1 to 20-second test.

Safety Guidelines

WARNING! Explosion, Fire, and Severe Burn Hazard

The SAGE UMT™ contains an internal, rechargeable Li-ion battery pack. The battery pack is not field serviceable. Avoid overcharging, heating above 185°F (85°C), crushing, or piercing the handle. A damaged battery pack can cause an explosion or fire.

WARNING! High-Voltage and Burn Hazards

  • High-Voltage: Accidental contact with live electrical power sources could induce an electrical arc. Always use a non-conductive extension pole in areas where high-voltage is present.
  • Burn Hazard: Frequent or prolonged contact of the metal probe tip with high-temperature surfaces (e.g., active steam traps) will heat the probe tip. Allow the probe tip to cool before touching bare skin.

Maintenance Caution

DO NOT rinse or immerse the unit in water or other cleaning solutions. DO NOT clean or dry with compressed air. Clean the enclosure with a mild detergent and warm water using a damp towel. Clean the IR lens cover using a cotton swab with alcohol.
