BURKERT 20120869 Type 8647 AirLINE SP Valve Island (24-Bank, 11 mm, 2x 3/2-Way CF C)

BURKERT 20120869 Type 8647 AirLINE SP is a 24-bank electropneumatic valve island with 11 mm width, 24x (2x 3/2) CF C valves, G 1/4 ports, integrated pressure sensor, and Siemens SIMATIC ET 200SP integration.

BURKERT 20120869 Type 8647 AirLINE SP Valve Island (24-Bank, 11 mm, 2x 3/2-Way CF C)

BURKERT 20120869 Type 8647 AirLINE SP is a modular electropneumatic automation system engineered for direct integration into Siemens SIMATIC ET 200SP and SIMATIC ET 200SP HA distributed I/O systems. Configured as a 24-station valve block with an 11 mm station pitch, this unit incorporates 24 double pilot valves providing 48 independent 3/2-way normally closed (circuit function C) pneumatic channels. Operating across a pressure span of 2.5 bar to 10 bar, it features pneumatic HotSwap on port 1 (P), integrated non-return check valves on exhaust ducts 3 (R) and 5 (S), and an integrated electronic pressure sensor on the supply unit.

Built to Revision 2 (REV.2) manufacturing standards, the island uses a unified FM20 pneumatic flange pattern, blue push-in release rings, and an optimized internal flow architecture. The system mounts directly on a standard DIN rail inside control cabinets, providing IP20 protection individually and achieving IP65 integrity within closed enclosures.

System Architecture and Module Composition

Type 8647 consists of connection units, pneumatic base modules, electronic base modules (PQ modules), and integrated solenoid pilot valves. Supply air and deaeration occur through specialized pneumatic supply units (PSU):

BURKERT 20120869 Type 8647 connection units overview

  • Left Connection Unit (PSU-L-PS): Anchors the block to the standard DIN rail, interfaces with the Siemens ET 200SP backplane bus, and contains an electronic pressure sensor with LED status indicators.
  • Intermediate Feed Unit (PSU-M): Installed centrally along the valve row. For 2x 3/2-way valves, Burkert specifications mandate an additional intermediate air supply after every 16 valve functions to prevent pressure drops during concurrent actuation. SKU 20120869 incorporates 1 intermediate feed unit.
  • Right Connection Unit (PSU-R): Terminates the pneumatic supply channels and secures the mechanical block assembly to the DIN rail.

BURKERT 20120869 Type 8647 valve units and module layout

The 24 valve stations are assembled from electronic PQ modules and corresponding pneumatic base modules. The pneumatic modules house the D6 push-in connectors in a wavy channel arrangement characteristic of REV.2, delivering working air downward through the module base.

Integrated Pressure Monitoring and Diagnostics

SKU 20120869 integrates an electronic pressure sensor within the left connection unit (PSU-L-PS). The sensor continuously tracks system line pressure across a 0 to 10 bar relative span with a precision of 0.2 bar and a measurement cycle exceeding 10 readings per second. It withstands overload pressures up to 14 bar without loss of calibration.

Diagnostic and status information is displayed through module-level LEDs and graphic LC displays on each electronic PQ module:

  • PWR OK / PWR LEDs: Confirm the presence of adequate 24 V DC supply voltage across connection and valve units.
  • DIAG LEDs: Signal module status, unparameterized states (flashing green), or active diagnostics (flashing red).
  • Pressure LEDs: Illuminate green for normal operating pressure, yellow/orange upon undercutting or exceeding configured warning thresholds, and red upon breaching error limits.
  • Graphic LC Display: Shows real-time valve actuation states, numeric pressure readings, position feedback, and alternating alphanumeric fault text (such as wire break, short circuit, or maintenance limits).
  • Independent Cycle Counters: Each channel tracks operations separately for the pilot valve and the field actuator. Warning thresholds can be parameterized to trigger preventive maintenance notices.

Diagnostic Reporting via Bus

Diagnostic messages such as wire break and short circuit are evaluated per channel when the respective channel is enabled. If supply voltage drops below the 21.6 V DC low threshold, the system triggers a "No supply voltage L+" diagnostic and turns off the valve coils to avoid undefined mechanical states.

Siemens SIMATIC Integration

Type 8647 connects to the backplane bus of Siemens SIMATIC ET 200SP and ET 200SP HA interface modules without external communication cabling. The PLC exchanges cyclic I/O data, module parameters, and detailed channel diagnostics over PROFINET IO or PROFIBUS DP.

Safety Shutdown with Siemens F-PM-E

Type 8647 REV.2 modules marked "FC" are compatible with the Siemens F-PM-E 24VDC/8A PPM ST fail-safe power module. When de-energized by the F-PM-E module, Type 6524 pilot valves return safely to their rest position. Configure the F-PM-E dark test readback time between 1.5 ms and 2.5 ms, and the switch-on test readback time to 0.8 ms to prevent false trips.

Pneumatic and Electrical Installation

Mount the valve block horizontally or vertically on a standard DIN rail (TH 35-7.5 or TH 35-15) inside an IP54 or higher industrial enclosure. Ensure a minimum clearance of 5 cm between the upper edge of the valve block and the cabinet ceiling (8 cm if external valve shutdown EVS modules are present) to facilitate heat dissipation and screwdriver access.

Pneumatic Ports and Piping

  • Port 1 (P): Primary pressure supply, G 1/4 female thread. Tightening torque: 4 Nm to 7 Nm (maximum 20 Nm).
  • Ports 3 (R) and 5 (S): Common exhaust ducts, G 1/4 female thread. Equip with suitably sized exhaust silencers or exhaust piping to prevent backpressure.
  • Ports 2 (A) and 4 (B): Working connections delivered via D6 push-in couplings on the pneumatic base. In 2x 3/2-way double valves, upper connection 1 acts as port 2, while lower connection 2 acts as port 4.

Push-in connections adhere to ISO 14743:2020. Tubing must be cut straight and pushed firmly beyond the stainless steel holding claws. Minimum retention forces are 120 N for polyamide (PA) tubing and 100 N for polyurethane (PU) tubing.

Maintenance, HotSwap, and Replacement Parts

SKU 20120869 includes integrated P-shutoff valves beneath each valve position. This pneumatic HotSwap mechanism permits the replacement of individual pilot valves while the island remains under line pressure (up to 10 bar). When removing a valve, air vents briefly until the shutoff mechanism seats automatically, allowing all other 23 stations to continue uninterrupted operation.

Maintenance Safety Instructions

Removing a valve on a base module with P-shutoff depressurizes working ports 2 and 4 for that specific station, which may cause connected actuators to move unexpectedly. Mechanically secure all connected actuators before loosening valve fastening screws.
