BURKERT 20139294 (Type 8652) is an electro-pneumatic AirLINE valve island configured with 4 valve slots, developed specifically for process automation tasks. The pre-configured unit incorporates four 3/2-way normally closed (circuit function CF-C) servo-assisted solenoid valves, an anodised aluminium AirLINE Quick baseplate adapter for control cabinet floor mounting, and dual RJ45 Industrial Ethernet communication ports that support PROFINET IO, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, EtherCAT, and CC-Link IE Field Basic.

BURKERT 20139294 Type 8652 AirLINE valve island overview

Equipped with integrated check valves in exhaust ducts 3 (R) and 5 (S), the valve terminal prevents unexpected pilot actuation triggered by backpressure spikes during valve switching. The integrated pneumatic HotSwap function in pressure supply channel 1 (P) permits live valve replacement while the pneumatic pressure supply remains active.

AirLINE Quick Cabinet Floor Adapter

AirLINE Quick allows direct fastening of the valve island to the floor or wall of the control cabinet. All pneumatic connection lines pass through the cabinet base, eliminating separate bulkhead pass-through fittings and external tubing inside the enclosure.

Pneumatic Circuit Functions and HotSwap

Type 8652 valve islands utilize Type 6534 pneumatic valves piloted by Type 6164 micro-solenoids. Article 20139294 is fitted with four circuit function C valves (3/2-way normally closed).

Circuit Function C (CF C)

Servo-assisted 3/2-way solenoid valve with manual override. In de-energised state, working port 2 is connected to exhaust duct 3, while supply port 1 remains closed. Energising the coil routes pilot air to open supply port 1 to working port 2.

Additional Circuit Functions Supported by Type 8652 Platforms

  • Circuit Function C (2 × 3/2-way): Two independent 3/2-way normally closed valves in a single 11 mm slice.
  • Circuit Function D (2 × 3/2-way): Two independent 3/2-way normally open valves.
  • Circuit Function H (5/2-way): Single solenoid 5/2-way valve; pressurized via port 1, alternating pressure between ports 2 and 4.
  • Circuit Function Z (5/2-way): Bistable pulse variant with two separate coils and manual override.
  • Circuit Function L (5/3-way): Mid-position all ports closed (locked).
  • Circuit Function M (5/3-way): Mid-position ports 2 and 4 ventilated (pressurized).
  • Circuit Function N (5/3-way): Mid-position ports 2 and 4 exhausted.

Pneumatic HotSwap Function

The integrated HotSwap check mechanism in the subbase allows individual valves to be removed and replaced during live operation without depressurizing the main air header. Insertion of a replacement valve unseats the internal check seal, restoring supply to the valve slot. The presence of the HotSwap mechanism reduces nominal flow capacity by approximately 3%.

BURKERT 20139294 Type 8652 control cabinet installation clearance

Installation Clearance for HotSwap

When installing the valve island inside an enclosure, maintain the minimum specified clearance between the front edge of the valve island and the cabinet door. This clearance ensures sufficient space to pivot and withdraw individual Type 6534 valves during live maintenance.

Electrical Power Supply and Fieldbus Interfaces

BURKERT 20139294 Type 8652 interface plate 24 V assembly

Type 8652 separates electronic control power from the pneumatic actuator coil power to support safety shutdowns and suppress switching transients.

System Architecture and Integration

Type 8652 incorporates an illuminated LC display that outputs diagnostic messages in clear text and graphic symbols, displaying channel status, supply voltage deviations, and cycle counters directly at the terminal.

BURKERT 20139294 Type 8652 Industrial Ethernet network configuration topology

In field topologies, an AirLINE Type 8652 equipped with an Industrial Ethernet gateway acts as the primary master station, communicating with PLC automation architectures while coordinating slave valve islands over büS/CANopen communication links.

Device configuration, cyclical process image parameterization, diagnostic logging, and firmware maintenance are conducted through Bürkert Communicator software (Type 8920) on the Efficient Device Integration Platform (EDIP).

Safety Instructions and Hazardous Location Conditions

Electrical Disconnection in Explosive Atmospheres

Do not connect or disconnect electrical wiring terminals when an explosive atmosphere is present. De-energize all circuits before servicing. Terminal connectors for 24 V DC power, SIA interlocks, EVS, and digital inputs may only be unplugged in de-energized conditions unless the area has been verified to be non-hazardous.

HotSwap in Hazardous Environments

HotSwap valve replacement must not be performed while a potentially explosive atmosphere is present. HotSwap procedures are permitted only when testing confirms that the ambient atmosphere is free of explosive gas or combustible dust concentrations.
