BURKERT 20039114 (Type 8647) AirLINE SP 28-Bank Pneumatic Valve Island, 11 mm REV2

BURKERT 20039114 (Type 8647) AirLINE SP is a modular electropneumatic automation system configured as a 28-bank pneumatic valve island in revision 2 (REV2). Developed for direct mechanical and electrical docking to Siemens SIMATIC ET 200SP and SIMATIC ET 200SP HA distributed I/O systems, the unit enables centralized pilot control of pneumatic actuators, process valves, and cylinders directly within the automation rack. The island features an 11 mm station pitch, mixed 3/2-way pilot valve configuration, G 1/4 primary air supply connections, one intermediate feed module (PSU-M), bottom-oriented D6 push-in working ports, integrated non-return check valves on exhaust channels 3 (R) and 5 (S), and pneumatic HotSwap check valves on supply channel 1 (P).

Operating across a nominal pressure span of 2.5 to 10.0 bar, the valve island provides continuous duty (100% ED) pneumatic switching for medium temperatures between 0 °C and +50 °C and ambient cabinet temperatures between 0 °C and +55 °C. Electrical power and fieldbus communication are established automatically through the backplane bus of the adjoining Siemens ET 200SP BaseUnits. Channel diagnostics, valve switching cycles, and visual status indication are rendered on localized module liquid crystal displays and light-emitting diodes, conforming to IP20 enclosure standards on standard DIN rail mountings.

Generation Revision 2 (REV2) Enhancements

BURKERT Type 8647 REV2 introduces optimized pneumatic base modules, connection units, and valve interfaces. The mechanical and fluidic interface between the single valves and the pneumatic base module is standardized using the FM20 pattern across single 3/2-way, single 5/2-way, and double 2x3/2-way pilot valves.

Flange Profile Incompatibility

Single valves Type 6524 (3/2-way) and Type 6525 (5/2-way) from generation REV1 cannot be mounted on REV2 pneumatic base modules. The mechanical guide profiles prevent cross-mounting. When servicing or replacing valves on article 20039114, only REV2-designated replacement valves with FM20 flange patterns must be used.

Siemens Distributed I/O Integration

Type 8647 integrates directly into Siemens automation topologies without requiring point-to-point discrete wiring between PLC output cards and solenoid coils. The valve island communicates through the interface module (IM 155-6 PN or IM 155-6 DP) or ET 200SP CPU via the internal backplane bus.

Station Configuration Parameters

  • Load Voltage Supply: The 24 V DC (±10%, residual ripple 2.4 Vss) coil supply is drawn through the internal power bus. A light-colored Siemens BaseUnit (BU...D or BU...D/T) must be placed immediately to the left of the valve block to provide a segregated potential group.
  • Subsequent Modules: The internal load voltage bus terminates at the right interface of Type 8647. When adding further Siemens ET 200SP I/O modules to the right of the valve island, a new light-colored BaseUnit must be installed to re-supply load voltage. In SIMATIC ET 200SP HA stations, no modules may be installed to the right of the valve block.
  • Software Engineering: Integration is executed via PROFINET GSDML or PROFIBUS GSD device description files. Native integration into Siemens STEP 7 Classic uses Hardware Support Package HSP2105 (V5.5 SP4+), TIA Portal uses HSP0225 (V14 SP1+), and PCS 7 (V9.0 SP2+) uses Hardware Update Package HUP.

Intermediate Feed Requirement

Pneumatic supply guidelines dictate that an intermediate supply unit (PSU-M) is required after every 24 valve functions (or after 16 valve functions when using 2x3/2-way double valves). Article 20039114 includes one factory-configured intermediate feed unit (PSU-M, G 1/4) to maintain uniform line pressure across all 28 valve stations.

Pneumatic Connection Ports

  • 1 (P) Primary Pressure Supply: G 1/4 female thread located on left, middle, and right connection units.
  • 3 (R) and 5 (S) Exhaust Channels: G 1/4 female thread. Article 20039114 includes integrated check valves in exhaust ducts 3 and 5 to prevent backpressure infiltration into unactuated circuits.
  • X Auxiliary Pilot Air: M5 female thread for pilot exhaust venting or external auxiliary pilot pressure (>2.5 bar).
  • 2 (A) and 4 (B) Working Outlets: Integrated D6 (6 mm outer diameter) push-in couplings exiting from the bottom face of the pneumatic base modules.

Compatible Pilot Valves and Electronic Modules

The 28 valve slots are populated with high-speed solenoid pilot valves mounted onto 4-slot or 8-slot pneumatic and electronic base units.

Pilot Valve Specifications

  • Type 6524 (Single 3/2-Way): Consists of a Type 6144 flipper pilot solenoid and a pneumatic poppet seat valve. Delivers a nominal air flow rate of 300 l/min ($Q_{\text{Nn}}$ measured at +20 °C, 6 bar inlet, 1 bar pressure drop). Nominal coil power is 0.8 W at 24 V DC, drawing 40 mA inrush and 28 mA holding current after 120 ms.
  • Type 6524 (Double 2x3/2-Way): Integrates two independently controllable 3/2-way seat valves within a single 11 mm body, doubling functional density. Power consumption is 2 x 0.8 W with integrated power reduction.
  • Type 6525 (Single 5/2-Way): Operates 5/2-way circuits with a 300 l/min nominal flow rate and 0.8 W power consumption.
  • Type 0460 (5/2-Way Impulse or 5/3-Way): Utilizes a pneumatic spool valve driven by double-coil pilots, providing a nominal flow rate of 200 l/min and 2.0 to 7.0 bar operating range.

Electronic Base Modules (PQ Modules)

The electronic base modules house valve driver electronics, short-circuit and open-circuit wire break detection circuits, and front-facing LCD screens. Each channel features two independent switching cycle counters: one tracking pilot valve operations and one tracking field actuator cycles. Acyclic communication records maintenance limits via control data records (DS130 to DS135).

Safety Shutdown Capabilities

Type 8647 supports three methods for de-energizing pilot valves during emergency or interlock conditions:

  1. SIA Channel-Specific Shutdown: Specific pilot valves are ordered with a secondary flying lead cable interface. An external safety relay interrupts the coil power to an isolated channel while retaining display and diagnostics on the remaining block.
  2. EVS Module-Level Shutdown: Electronic base modules designated with "EVS" include an upper 2-pole pluggable terminal (0.14 to 1.5 mm², contact capacity 1.5 A at 24 V DC). Opening a potential-free contact shuts down the load supply to all 4 or 8 valves on that module. Logic and LCD displays remain functional, reporting "EVS active".
  3. F-PM-E Power Module Group Shutdown: When combined with Siemens SIMATIC ET 200SP, the valve island can be operated downstream of an F-PM-E 24VDC/8A PPM ST fail-safe power module. The F-PM-E module safety-shuts the load voltage line to the entire segment.

Installation and Maintenance Procedures

BURKERT 20039114 Type 8647 dimensional drawing

DIN-Rail Mounting

  1. Loosen all DIN-rail fastening clamp screws completely counter-clockwise.
  2. Hook the valve island onto the standard top-hat rail (TH 35-7.5 or TH 35-15) inside the IP54 control cabinet.
  3. Maintain a minimum clearance of 5 cm (8 cm when EVS terminals are wired) between the top of the valve block and adjacent trunking to ensure adequate heat dissipation and tool clearance.
  4. Tighten all fastening screws clockwise to approximately 1.8 Nm.
  5. Slide the adjoining Siemens ET 200SP BaseUnits flush against the left interface until the mechanical latches click into place.

Pneumatic HotSwap Valve Servicing

Article 20039114 incorporates automatic P-shutoff valves inside the pneumatic sub-base stations. Solenoid valves can be replaced under active line pressure without venting the entire manifold:

  1. Secure external pneumatic cylinders and process actuators against uncommanded movement prior to intervention.
  2. Loosen the two diagonal M2 fastening screws on the defective valve.
  3. Pull the valve vertically off the base. The integrated P-shutoff valve closes mechanically upon valve removal, isolating channel 1 (P) and restricting air exhaust to a brief initial purge.
  4. Inspect the new FM20 replacement profile seal for correct seating.
  5. Position the replacement valve and tighten the two M2 screws diagonally to a torque of 0.25 to 0.30 Nm.

Push-In Pneumatic Tubing Guidelines

Pneumatic push-in connections conform to DIN ISO 14743:2020. To ensure leak-free operation and adequate tubing retention, hoses must be cut strictly perpendicular to their axis. Outer diameter tolerances must not exceed ±0.08 mm for 6 mm polyamide (PA) or ±0.10 mm for 6 mm polyurethane (PU). The minimum retention pull-out force is 120 N for PA tubing and 100 N for PU tubing.
